1.                  Purpose of Human Creation

  • Khalifah of Allah (and Khalifah al-rasool as well as Khalifath al-Mumineen)
  • Obedience of Allah (personal, social to professional and organizational life)
  • Dignified and honourable life (whole creation to benefit of human beings)
  • Acceptance of Allah (as the Lord and Sustainer of humanity)

2.                  Islamic Vision of Development

According to Imam Al-Ghazali Maqasid Al-Shariah is human welfare based on:

  • Deen    (Faith)               Establish the foundation of the reality of life
  • Aql       (Mind)               Develop and utilise the powerful creative tool
  • Maal     (Wealth)            Earn material prosperity and gain self-reliance
  • Nafs     (Body)               Maintain and improve good health to live well
  • Nasl     (Future)             Create future generations and progress in life

3.                  Human Development: Internal Relations

According to Prof. Dr. Naquib Al-Attas (Malaysia, ISTAC) and Dr. Stephen Covey (USA, 7 Habits) human beings have 4 distinguishable entities within them:

  • Soul     (Rooh)              wants a Legacy
  • Body    (Nafs)               wants to Live
  • Mind    (Aql)                 wants to Learn
  • Heart    (Qalb)               wants to Love
  • According to Qur’an, conflict takes place between Soul and Body representing good and evil forces within us
  • 3 outcomes of the conflict: Nafs Ammarah (evil wins), Nafs Lawwama (war continues with temporary wins of one or the other), Nafs Mutmainna (good wins)
  • Prize for the winner: Our life control through Mind and Heart (If life is a car, mind is the steering and heart is the engine, and the driver is the winner of the conflict to run our lives)

4.                  Human Development: External Relations

4-Sector Model of external human development in society where due balance is required:

  • Family sector for personal services
  • Private Sector for private services
  • Public Sector for public services
  • NGO Sector for community services

5.                  Mechanism for Human Development

  • Build foundations for development (AAA): Aqida to recognize reality (ويكفر بالطاغوت ويؤمن بالله) Akhlaq to aligned personality (ح- بعثت لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق) – Aql to lead development  (لأيات لأولى الألباب)
  • Commit to lifelong learning (RRR): Read to know; Reflect to learn; Reform to apply learning
  • Follow process of improvement (HHH): Head to understand – Heart to own – Hand to act
  • Apply suitable assessment system (QQQ): Qibla for direction – Quality for example – Quantity for impact
